A beautifully preserved example of early Australian jewellery, this antique shield brooch was crafted by Aronson & Co of Little Collins Street, Melbourne, one of Australia's most respected historic manufacturing jewellers.

Stamped with the distinctive Wheatsheaf mark denoting 9ct gold and the export flag used on pieces destined for the New Zealand market, this brooch represents a fascinating chapter in Australasian jewellery history.

The design centres on a finely engraved shield motif, symbolising protection, honour and loyalty. At its heart sits a star-set paste stone, a sparkling diamond substitute that was highly fashionable during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Far from being viewed as an inferior choice, quality paste stones were admired for their brilliance and allowed jewellers to create elegant and affordable luxury pieces.

Rich yellow gold is complemented by subtle rose gold accents, while the original safety chain remains intact—a feature often reserved for jewellery considered valuable enough to safeguard against loss.

With its heraldic styling, engraved detailing and unmistakable Australian provenance, this is a piece that feels both decorative and symbolic. Whether worn on a blazer lapel, knitwear or a modern coat, it brings over a century of craftsmanship and character to contemporary styling.
